Gold Slips 0.58% on the Week to $4,165; Kitco Survey: Wall Street Neutral, Main Street Leans Bearish
18 Oct 2026 · EmasKuy Team
Gold ended a volatile week near $4,165 after falling to $4,073 on hot CPI and then failing to break $4,200. Half of Wall Street analysts are now neutral, while Main Street leans slightly bearish. Galeri24 and UBS rose on Sunday, while Antam held at Rp2,572,000.
This Week: From $4,217 to $4,073, Then Back
Spot gold opened the week at $4,193.59 on Sunday evening and rose to a weekly high of $4,216.91 on Monday. Then September CPI rose 3.7% y/y, above expectations, followed by a hotter-than-expected PPI. Gold fell to a weekly low of $4,073.35 at midday Wednesday.
The recovery was quick, but not enough. According to Kitco, gold last traded near $4,165.42, down 0.58% on the week and 0.13% on Friday. Trading Economics put it at $4,166.39, down 0.11% on the day. Either way, $4,200 again acted as a ceiling.
Kitco Survey: Analysts Split, Retail Doubtful
Of 12 Wall Street analysts, 6 (50%) expect gold to trade sideways next week, 4 (33%) expect it to rise and 2 (17%) expect a fall. On Main Street, of 139 respondents, 63 (45%) are bearish, 60 (43%) bullish and 16 (12%) expect consolidation. The three-vote gap shows retail is split almost evenly.
Views vary. Stanley of Forex.com sees upside as long as $4,000 holds, and Kuptsikevich of FxPro sees room toward $4,400–$4,500 before the midterms. On the other side, Razaqzada of StoneX Bullion is modestly bearish until resistance breaks, and Massabni of XS.com is bearish because the Middle East conflict has no resolution in sight.
Yields, the Dollar and the Fed
The 10-year Treasury yield peaked at 5.299%, just below its prior high of about 5.32%, then fell sharply on Thursday. The dollar strengthened early in the week but weakened on Thursday and Friday, the first time it weakened in five weeks. For gold, both helped ease the pressure after CPI.
Tightening expectations have not gone away, though. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh did not signal an October hike, but the rate curve still prices about 70 bps of hikes, and Trading Economics puts the odds of a December hike at about 92%. Pavilonis says gold would benefit if the 10-year yield falls below 5%, but could drop to at least $3,500 if yields rise to 8%.
The Big Picture and Next Week’s Agenda
Gold is down about 4% on the month and sits about 25.7% below the $5,608.35 record set in January. Levels analysts cite: support at $4,154 and resistance at $4,179, then deeper support near $4,100. Above, the weekly high of $4,216.91 is the next test; below, the $4,073.35 low.
Next week’s calendar is light: September housing starts, building permits and pending home sales (Tuesday), weekly jobless claims (Thursday), then the S&P Global flash PMIs and the University of Michigan’s final October consumer sentiment (Friday). After that, focus shifts to the October 27–28 Fed meeting.
Antam and Other Brands on Sunday
Antam’s latest confirmed price stays at Rp2,572,000 per gram with a Rp2,387,000 buyback, a Rp185,000 spread, or about 7.2%. There is no confirmed Logam Mulia update for Sunday yet, so this is still Saturday’s price.
Galeri24 rose Rp6,000 to Rp2,523,000 with a Rp2,375,000 buyback: Rp49,000 cheaper than Antam with a Rp148,000 spread, about 5.9%. UBS rose Rp7,000 to Rp2,548,000 with a Rp2,349,000 buyback: Rp24,000 cheaper than Antam with a Rp199,000 spread, about 7.8%. Galeri24’s buyback is now only Rp12,000 below Antam’s.
Playbook: A Quiet Week, No Clear Direction
The split survey matches the chart: gold is trapped between $4,073 and $4,217. Near-term scenarios: breaking $4,179, then $4,217, opens the way back above $4,200; losing $4,154 could test $4,100, then $4,073. Structurally, Trading Economics shows China’s gold reserves rising to 2,346.43 tonnes as of June 2026 from 2,313.46 tonnes.
For rupiah investors, a quiet data week is no reason to guess the direction. Fixed-amount DCA averages the purchase price in either scenario, and the difference in spreads across brands, from about 5.9% to 7.8%, is worth factoring in if you plan to sell back.
