Payrolls Add Just 29K, Yet Gold Closes Lower: Why the Spike Faded So Fast
3 Oct 2026 · EmasKuy Team
US jobs data came in far below forecasts and gold briefly jumped to $4,223. But yields and the dollar stayed firm, so gold closed lower near $4,141 and logged a second weekly loss. Antam fell Rp2,000 to Rp2,574,000, while buyback fell further.
Weak Data, Short Reaction
The September non-farm payrolls report released on Friday evening, October 2, showed the US economy added just 29,000 jobs, far below the consensus of about 89,000 to 90,000. Unemployment rose to 4.2% against a 4.1% forecast, and hourly pay rose only 0.1% versus the expected 0.3%, or 3.0% over the year.
Earlier months were revised down too: August to 133,000 from 162,000, and July to 21,000 from 31,000. Gold reacted at once. Kitco recorded spot gold up about 1% at $4,223 shortly after the release, as markets judged that a weakening labor market reduces the Fed’s case for raising rates.
Why the Spike Ran Out
The spike did not last to the close. Spot gold ended near $4,142, down 0.83% according to Kitco, and Trading Economics recorded $4,140, down 0.90%. The reason: the US 10-year Treasury yield, which had dipped, climbed back to around 5.25%. A day earlier, 10- and 30-year yields had even touched their highest levels since 2002.
Odds of an October Fed hike are now about 22%, far below the roughly 70% seen early in the week. But markets have not erased December hike risk: before the data, those odds stood near 79%. Add a dollar that firmed over the week and Brent at $101 a barrel, and gold still faces a high opportunity cost as an asset with no yield.
The Big Picture and the Level Map
Gold logged a second straight weekly loss, having fallen more than 3% over the week even before payrolls. Over the month it is down 7.5%, though still up 6.5% from a year ago. At around $4,141, gold sits roughly 26% below its January record of $5,608.
Technical levels from Kitco: resistance at $4,204 to $4,231, support at $4,150 then $4,111. Below that, $4,100 remains the main line of defense, with the June low at $4,009. The next data markets are watching are ISM Services on Monday and US CPI inflation on October 14, which could shift December hike odds again.
Antam Edges Down, Buyback Falls Further
Antam’s 1-gram bar fell Rp2,000 to Rp2,574,000, a third straight daily drop, while buyback fell Rp6,000 to Rp2,380,000 per gram. Because buyback fell more than the selling price, the spread widened from Rp190,000 to Rp194,000, about 7.5% of the selling price. That means today’s buyers need a slightly larger price rise to break even.
Galeri24’s 1-gram bar is at Rp2,511,000 with a Rp2,370,000 buyback, Rp63,000 cheaper than Antam with a spread of Rp141,000, about 5.6%. Galeri24’s buyback is now just Rp10,000 below Antam’s. UBS is at Rp2,535,000 with a Rp2,344,000 buyback, Rp39,000 cheaper than Antam, with a spread of Rp191,000, about 7.5%.
Playbook: Weak Data Is Not an Automatic Ticket
The lesson from Friday: data that is good for gold in theory is not enough while yields and the dollar stay high. On the other hand, the structural demand base remains. Central banks bought 289 tonnes of gold in Q2 2026, and gold ETF holdings grew by 50 tonnes through September even as prices fell. As long as $4,100 holds, this correction can still be read as consolidation; if it breaks, $4,009 becomes the next reference.
For rupiah investors, the weekend is a good time to review the plan rather than react to a single number. Fixed-amount DCA buys you more grams when prices fall, and choosing a brand with a small spread reaches break-even sooner. This article is educational analysis, not personalized financial advice.
